Youth in Makueni County face significant employment and livelihood challenges despite representing a substantial population portion. Limited economic opportunities, inadequate education, and rural location create barriers to income generation and life advancement. Youth unemployment and underemployment remain persistent development challenges.

Rural employment opportunities in agriculture and pastoral sectors remain limited, with insufficient labour demand to employ growing youth cohorts. Many young people seek migration to Nairobi and other urban centres for wage employment or business opportunities. Rural-to-urban migration represents a livelihood strategy though it creates social and family disruptions.

Education completion rates vary, with many youth leaving school early due to cost constraints or family circumstances. Secondary and tertiary education completion increases employment prospects and earning potential. However, educational access remains limited for rural youth with financial constraints.

Informal sector employment including petty trading, casual labour, and transportation services provides income for many Makueni youth. These opportunities offer flexibility but limited security and earning potential. Youth in informal sectors remain vulnerable to economic shocks.

Youth entrepreneurship initiatives supported by county government and NGOs promote business development and self-employment. Some youth have successfully established small businesses in trade, services, and agriculture. However, access to capital, business training, and market information remains limited for many aspiring entrepreneurs.

Pastoralist youth face particular challenges as pastoral production has declined. Traditionally, pastoral youth would accumulate cattle herds as transition to adulthood. Contemporary economic constraints limit this pathway for many youth.

The youth population represents both an economic dividend (productive workforce) and a challenge (providing employment for growing numbers). Makueni must address youth unemployment and skills development to realize the potential of its youth population while preventing social instability.
