Climate change has intensified in Kitui County, manifesting as increased temperature, delayed rainy seasons, shortened rainy season duration, and increased rainfall variability. These changes have exacerbated drought frequency, extended drought duration, and compromised water security. Worsening drought and its impact on livelihoods represent major development challenges.
Observed temperature increases have been documented through meteorological records and community observations. Pastoralists and farmers report that conditions have become hotter, with higher peak temperatures during dry seasons. Temperature increases stress vegetation, livestock, and human populations.
Rainfall changes include delayed season onset, shortened season duration, and increased variability within seasons. Some seasons bring adequate rain while others bring minimal precipitation. This unpredictability makes agricultural planning and pastoral management increasingly difficult.
Drought frequency and severity have increased substantially. Multiyear droughts that would have been rare are now more common. Drought impacts on pastoral and agricultural production have become more severe, creating food security emergencies.
Water scarcity has intensified as rainfall reliability declined and temperature increases accelerated evaporation. Groundwater depletion has increased due to over-extraction. Surface water sources disappear earlier in dry seasons. Water access for human and livestock consumption has become more constrained.
Vegetation degradation and desertification have accelerated as climate change stressed ecosystems. Grazing vegetation has declined, forcing pastoralists to move herds longer distances. Forest vegetation has become more stressed, affecting honey production and other forest-dependent livelihoods.
Community adaptation responses include water harvesting technologies, crop diversification toward climate-resilient varieties, livestock herd composition changes, and livelihood diversification. However, adaptation capacity remains limited by available resources.
Climate change response has become a development priority. Building local adaptation capacity and integrating adaptation into development planning remain essential for sustainable Kitui development.
