Kirinyaga County occupies the southern slopes of Mount Kenya in central Kenya. This small, densely populated agricultural county has a population of approximately 620,000 people. The county is predominantly Kikuyu and is known worldwide for producing some of Kenya's most sought-after coffee. Kerugoya and Kutus serve as the twin county headquarters, while the Tana River, Kenya's longest river, has its headwaters in Kirinyaga.

Geography and Climate

The county benefits from the Mount Kenya microclimate, which creates ideal conditions for high-altitude agriculture. The temperate slopes support coffee at mid-elevations, tea at higher altitudes, and rice cultivation in the lowland Mwea plains below. This geographic diversity makes Kirinyaga one of Kenya's most agriculturally productive regions per capita.

Economy

The economy is anchored by coffee production, which commands premium prices on international markets due to the Kirinyaga single-origin designation. The Mwea Irrigation Scheme, covering approximately 30,000 acres, makes the county the largest rice-producing area in Kenya. Dairy farming thrives on the mountain slopes, while horticulture (cut flowers and vegetables) provides additional income for smallholders.
