However, women's economic returns from fishing-related activities typically remain lower than men's, and women face discrimination in fishing-related benefits and decision-making.
Youth engagement with fishing has declined as young people pursue education and non-fishing employment. Fishing reputation as a difficult, low-income livelihood deters young people. Limited prospects for income improvement discourage youth entry into fishing. Generational knowledge transmission of fishing skills has weakened as youth abandon fishing traditions.
