Homa Bay Water Access

Water access remains a critical challenge for Homa Bay County despite the county's location on Lake Victoria. Limited water supply infrastructure, environmental degradation, and pollution constrain safe drinking water access.

Lake Victoria Water Challenges

Lake Victoria's proximity has not translated into reliable water supply. Lake water quality is compromised by pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharge. Water salinity in some areas affects drinking water suitability.

Groundwater Access

Groundwater boreholes and shallow wells provide primary water sources for inland areas. Water quality varies, and groundwater levels are declining. Saline groundwater in some areas constrains drinking water access.

Water Supply Infrastructure

Water supply systems remain limited, with piped water unavailable in most areas. Water points including boreholes and shallow wells serve communities, though maintenance issues are common. Water treatment facilities are minimal.

Limited sanitation contributes to water contamination and disease transmission. Cholera, typhoid, and diarrheal diseases remain prevalent. Water-borne disease burden affects health outcomes.

Household Water Access

Many households rely on unprotected water sources including springs and surface water. Women and girls spend significant time collecting water. Water scarcity during dry seasons increases hardship.

Water and Fishing Communities

Fishing communities have access to lake water but face quality challenges. Pollution affects drinking water suitability. Fish processing uses lake water, creating health hazards.

Water Management

Water is managed by water service providers licensed by the national regulator. County government has water service responsibilities. Water resource management balances competing demands.
