Tourism represents a growing economic sector in Samburu County. The combination of exceptional wildlife, the Samburu National Reserve, and the Samburu culture as a tourist attraction creates diversified tourism opportunities.

Samburu National Reserve attracts both international and domestic tourists seeking wildlife viewing. The reserve's accessibility (more accessible than more remote northern reserves), permanent water creating seasonal wildlife concentrations, and the Samburu Special Five species create compelling tourist attractions.

Accommodation facilities ranging from luxury lodges to budget camps serve different market segments. These facilities provide employment for local guides, staff, and support services. Tourism employment offers income alternatives to pastoral production.

Cultural tourism showcases Samburu pastoral traditions, beadwork, warrior culture, and contemporary community life. Tourists visit Samburu communities, learn about pastoral practices, and purchase cultural products including beadwork. This cultural tourism provides income to participating communities.

The Maralal International Camel Derby, held annually in Maralal, attracts international visitors, media, and participants. The event generates tourism revenue and international publicity for the region. Camel racing, cultural performances, and visitor activities provide entertainment and economic opportunity.

Walking safaris, game drives, and river-based tourism activities diversify tourism offerings. These activities provide employment and revenue.

Tourism infrastructure development continues, with new lodges and facilities constructed. However, construction quality and environmental impact management vary.

Tourism benefits remain unevenly distributed. Communities and individuals closest to tourist sites receive most benefits. Local communities often remain marginalised in tourism benefit-sharing despite their cultural centrality to tourism attraction.

Conservation benefits arise from tourism revenue supporting reserve management and wildlife protection. However, tourism pressure on fragile arid ecosystems requires careful management to prevent environmental degradation.
