Food insecurity represents a significant challenge in Samburu County, driven by climatic variability, pastoral production risks, and limited livelihood diversification. Food insecurity affects portions of the population even during normal years.
Rainfall failure triggers food crises as livestock die and pastoral households lose income and food sources. Humanitarian responses including emergency food aid become necessary during severe droughts. Major droughts in 1984,1985, 2010,2011, and ongoing conditions in recent years created large-scale food emergencies requiring international assistance.
Pastoral household food security depends primarily on livestock production. Milk provides calories and nutrition, while animal sales finance purchases of staple foods. When droughts reduce livestock productivity, household food intake declines rapidly.
Malnutrition, particularly among children, occurs during drought periods and persists at low levels in many households. Micronutrient deficiencies including iron and iodine deficiency cause health problems. Public health nutrition programmes address malnutrition but operate with limited resources.
Market access affects food security significantly. Pastoral households require cash to purchase grain during seasons when pastoral production provides insufficient food. Limited income opportunities constrain purchasing power.
Agricultural production remains limited by rainfall constraints, though irrigation projects in some locations provide supplementary food. Farmers near the Ewaso Nyiro River cultivate vegetables using river water.
Social protection programmes including school feeding and cash transfers provide temporary food security assistance but reach limited populations. Coordination between government and humanitarian organisations varies.
Early warning systems monitor rainfall, vegetation, and market conditions to predict food crises. Early action based on these systems aims to prevent emergencies.
Livelihood diversification through tourism employment, trading, and other non-pastoral activities provides some households with income stability and reduced drought vulnerability.
